Vital Statistics Administration

Why does it take Social Security Adminstration 3 months to issue a replacement Social Security card?

I applied for a social security card almost 3 mos. ago, there was a discrepancy about my birthdate and they wanted to see my birth certificate I ordered an original state sealed birth certificate overnighted to me for $30.00 (thinking this would expediate the matter) went back to social security adminstration the same week in December had supporting documents of my birthdate; life ins. policy, high school transcript, baptismal record,I.R.S documents, then they told me they wanted to verify the birth certificate with vital statistics. I had to contact a liason before SS would notify me in February why I had not recevied my card, they finally sent me correspondence last week(through a liason) that they were running behind, would check into this situation and notify me. Running behind? Now how many people need a replacment card at one time? It is sad when administration is too busy to pick up the telephone and make a simple phone call to troubleshoot an urgent situation. Truly sad.

Damn! Ususally it is two weeks. I would go to the office again. Now that you have proven your identity, there is usually a paper they issue that shows your ss number on it. You should be able to use it in lieu of your card until you recieve the actual card. Most employers etc will accept it as it is from the SS dept. Once you get your card, you can show it to your employer, etc.
