Wood County Court House

how do you go after a dishonest contractor?

he installed new tub and shower unit, did not put any concrete under it, scratched and goudged the walls and the 130 year old wood work, left gaps at both ends of tub, took off without a finish inspection and wont come back. says he did no damage. we payed him roughly one fourth and are refusing to pay more until he finishes the job right and repairs the damage. just refinishing the plaster wall and wood work will be $470.00 plus the cost of a painter will be another two or three hundred. we only owe him about 750.00 he refuses to provide his license and contractor numbers. he filed mechanics lean on the property, we tried to get him into court and the judge would not hear the case as the house is not up for forclosure. seems iowa courts only protect the buisness owners and not the consumer. he can file lean for unfinished work and damage he left with no written contract, but i cant do the same to him for the damage. how do i go after him and the old buddy court of cass county iowa?

If he filed a lien on the property, he DID provide his contractor number to do that. The clerk of courts, or whoever records the lien MUST release that information to you. If you are having trouble filing a case, you may need an attorney to assist you. The court CAN’T refuse to hear a PROPERLY filed case on the grounds you listed.
